What is an energy label?

With an energy label, you can see how energy efficient a home is. An energy-efficient home often means lower energy costs, more comfortable living and is better for the environment. The energy label is expressed in classes A to G. A home with energy label A (or higher) is very energy efficient, while a home with energy label G is much less energy efficient. Very energy-efficient homes are given an extra specification, for example energy label A+.

Why is an energy label important?

  • If you are planning to sell your home, a valid registered energy label is mandatory.
  • If your home has a registered energy label B or higher, ABN AMRO offers you a discount on your mortgage interest rate. This is available at the start of a new fixed-rate period, or if you register the energy label within 24 months of the start of your fixed-rate period.

Energy label in 2024

Since 1 January 2021, the 'Simplified Energy Label' has been replaced by a new, more extensive energy label.

  • You make an appointment with an expert energy adviser, who visits your home. An energy performance calculation will then be made. The energy label is valid for 10 years.
  • The notary will check for the presence of an energy label when ownership of the home is transferred. You will immediately be fined if you sell your home without an energy label. The size of the fine depends on the situation.

Not all homes have a valid registered energy label. Via Milieu Centraal  (in Dutch), you can easily see what your current energy label is and how long it is valid.

Applying for a valid registered energy label

You can have your energy label registered by an approved energy adviser. The energy adviser will visit to inspect your home and record data, such as the presence of insulation. An energy performance calculation will then be made. The energy label is valid for 10 years.

The importance of an energy label

  1. Find an energy adviser in the database  (in Dutch) and make an appointment.
  2. The energy adviser will visit you to determine the characteristics of your home. The visit will take 1.5 to 2 hours.
  3. The energy adviser will carry out an energy performance calculation and register the energy label with the Dutch government.
  4. You will receive an energy label statement (PDF) from your energy adviser by email.
Good to know: not all organisations in the database offer services to consumers. You may have to approach several companies to have your energy label registered.

If you are buying a home with a registered energy label B or higher, you will receive a discount on your mortgage interest rate from ABN AMRO. This allows you to benefit from a reduction in your monthly mortgage payment. You do not need to supply us with the energy label yourself. We automatically check the label of your home with the Dutch government. If you have a mortgage with ABN AMRO and a home with a registered energy label B or higher, your discount will automatically be included in the interest rate review. You will benefit from this discount throughout the fixed-rate period.

If you are planning to renovate your home to energy label B or higher, make sure you register the energy label within 24 months of the start of your fixed-rate period to take advantage of the sustainability discount.

A sustainable home is better for the environment. After all, your fossil fuel consumption is much lower.

More comfortable living

An insulated home is less draughty and retains heat better.
