Sustainable renovation

What may be in it for you?

If you are planning to renovate your home to make it more sustainable, maybe because you want to reduce your energy bills or add value to your home, do the Energy Saving Check and read all about the options available to you. You can also find out how other people have made their homes more sustainable.

The Energy Saving Check

Better energy label increasingly important

A better energy label is becoming increasingly important when selling property, so making your home more energy-efficient can be a good investment that could get you greater returns than the current savings interest rate. An energy-efficient home potentially means lower energy bills, increased comfort, and reduced carbon emissions.

Renovating your home? Do it sustainably while you’re at it

A home renovation is the perfect time to install home insulation or other energy-efficiency measures. Using your savings is usually the cheapest option and you’ll get more for your money than you would if you leave it in a savings account. Alternatively, you could borrow on a mortgage or a personal loan. Suffice to say that you have to repay those, even if your energy savings are lower than initially estimated.

How to make your home sustainable

Insulation

Sustainable renovation does not have to be a major operation. A few simple adjustments can be very effective. Home insulation is one of them. Cavity wall insulation in particular is fairly easy to install. It is done entirely outside the house, so no mess inside.

Solar panels

Solar panels let you generate your own renewable energy. With 10 solar panels, you could save around 550 euros on an annual basis (source: Milieucentraal.nl (in Dutch). And you can claim back the VAT on the price of purchasing and installing solar panels from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Heat pump

A heat pump uses 60% less gas than a central heating boiler. This means potential savings on your energy bills. And it is very sustainable, because you will be using less fossil fuels to heat and cool your home.

Compulsory energy-efficiency measures when renovating your home

On 1 February 2022, several amendments to the 2012 Buildings Decree (in Dutch) came into effect. So if you have plans for a major renovation of your home that includes a new heating or cooling system or changes to the existing system, you may in some cases be under an obligation to include renewable energy measures, such as installing solar panels or a heat pump. Your contractor can tell you whether or not this applies to you.
