Your parents will no longer be able to access your account

Starting on your 18th birthday, your parents will no longer be able to access your account unless you authorise them to do so. So if you’d like your parents to keep an eye on your spending, you can authorise them to access your account after your birthday. Keep reading to find out more.

Here’s how banking will change

Proof of ID at ABN AMRO

Once you’ve turned 18, we’ll need proof of your identity and your signature. You and your parents will be sent a letter explaining this. You can arrange this yourself quickly and easily in the ABN AMRO app after your birthday. Simply go to ‘Profile’ in the ABN AMRO app and select ‘Personal Details’ followed by ‘Submit ID’.

Jongergroeirekening will be converted to a Student Package

If you have a Jongerengroeirekening, we’ll automatically convert it into a free Student Package at the start of the first month following your 18th birthday. The account number and your debit card will stay the same. The Student Package is free, even if you’re not going in to study. If you also have a personal account, you’ll be charged fees from your 18th birthday. Take a look at the fees page to see how much a current account costs per month. If you wish to prevent this, simply close it.

KinderToekomst and KinderBonus Sparen savings accounts will be closed

If you have a KinderToekomst savings account, we’ll close the account in January after you turn 18. We’ll transfer your savings, including the basic and bonus interest, to another ABN AMRO savings account in your name.

If you have a KinderBonus savings account, we will transfer your savings, including the basic and bonus interest, to another ABN AMRO savings account in your name in the month following your 18th birthday. If you don’t yet have a savings account, we’ll open one for you.

Things to remember

Your parents will no longer have access to your account

Starting on your 18th birthday, your parents will no longer be able to access your account unless you authorise them to do so.

Request a DigiD

Request a DigiD in order to take out health insurance and file a tax return. Go to Digid.nl.

Take out health insurance

Once you’re 18, you need your own health insurance. Make sure you also apply for a healthcare allowance, as this will save you money.

Take out other insurances

Whether you’re moving out or not, it’s wise to take out good insurance. Do the insurance check to find out about the most common insurance policies for (prospective) students.

File a tax return

You’ll soon have to file a tax return every year. This must always be done before 1 May. If you file a tax return in March, you’ll be notified of the outcome before 1 July.

Taking out your own insurance

If you’re about to start in your studies and move into student accommodation, it’s a good idea to take out a student insurance policy. This provides insurance for household contents, personal liability and any accidents.

Frequently asked questions by parents and young people

Can my parents still access my account?

No, your parents will no longer be able to access your account as they could with a Young Person’s Growth Account and KidsFuture savings account. From your 18th birthday onwards, you’ll be an adult by law and responsible for your own finances. Parents are, however, responsible for your maintenance until your 21st birthday. This means that they must provide you with financial support until you reach that age.

If you want your parents to continue monitoring your account, you can authorise them after your 18th birthday. We can arrange this in a few simple steps.

What if I don’t yet have a debit card?

If you don’t yet have a debit card, you can request one in the ABN AMRO app by following a few simple steps. You can request a debit card yourself in the ABN AMRO app from your 18th birthday onwards. Before your 18th birthday, your parents can do this for you.

I can’t see my balance!

Your current and savings accounts will be converted on your 18th birthday. When we do this, the balance will temporarily not be visible. If your accounts aren’t visible, you might just need to add them to your account overview. You can do this easily in the app.

How can I allow my parents continued access?

Your parents will soon no longer have automatic access to your account. But you can allow them to continue monitoring your account if you wish by authorising them after your 18th birthday. You can authorise a parent to access your account, but only if that parent is also an ABN AMRO client.
