Activating the ABN AMRO app using your ID

If you need to activate (or reactivate) the ABN AMRO app, all you need is your device, your debit card and account number, and your ID. Allow us to explain how it works. We also offer helpful tips in case it doesn’t work first time round.

How do I activate the app using my ID?

The ABN AMRO app uses the latest security methods, like verifying your identity using your device and proof of identity (ID). During the activation process, your device reads the chip in your ID and you take a photo. This way we can be sure that it really is you activating the app.

Will my ID work?

If you have a passport, driving licence or residence permit with an NFC chip, you can use it to activate the ABN AMRO app. The chip contains data like your photograph and your name. You can tell whether your ID has an NFC chip by checking it for the symbol shown here. Most passports and ID cards issued after 2001 have an NFC chip. The same applies to driving licences issued from 2016 onwards.

Watch the explanation

If you’d rather watch and listen to the instructions, the adviser in this video will show you how to activate the ABN AMRO app using your ID.

If you find written instructions with illustrations helpful, have a look at our manual in which we take you through all the steps needed to get the ABN AMRO app up and running. We explain how to download, activate and use the app for the first time.

Tips to help you activate the app

Tip 1: How to take a photo of your ID

Follow the on-screen instructions to take a good photo of your proof of identity. Here are a few tips:

  • Make sure your phone’s camera lens is clean.
  • Use a plain, dark background.
  • Find a spot with plenty of light to take the photo.
  • Avoid glare from the light source (flash, lamp, etc.) on your ID. If you are using an identity card, driving licence or residence permit, position it upright rather than on a flat surface. This will help avoid glare.
  • Make sure the card or the photo page of your passport fits completely in the frame you see on the screen.
Tip 2: How to scan your ID (NFC chip)

When activating the ABN AMRO app, we ask you to scan the NFC chip in your ID. Here are a few tips:

  • If your phone is in a case, remove it so that the chip reader on your device will work better.
  • Enable NFC in the settings on your phone.
  • If your phone does not locate the NFC chip right away, slowly move your phone from left to right and from top to bottom across the document, this way scanning the entire ID.
  • Your phone will vibrate once it’s found the chip. Once it does, it’s important that you do not move your phone until your phone notifies you that the scan has been completed.
Tip 3: How to take a photo of yourself

We ask that you take a photo of yourself so we can verify that you are the person shown on the ID. Here are a few tips:

  • You take a selfie using the camera on the front of your phone. Make sure that the camera lens is clean.
  • Use a plain background. If the app does not accept the photo, you can try different backgrounds.
  • Stand in a well-lit spot and turn your face to a window or a lamp, for example.
  • If you’re wearing a hat or cap, take it off.
  • We want to see your entire face, so also make sure that your face isn’t covered by a scarf, sunglasses or your hair.
  • Make sure your face is in the middle of the red circle and hold your phone at eye level.
Tip 4: How to activate the app without your ID

If your ID is not suitable for activating the ABN AMRO app, or if it is and you are still not able to get the activation to work, you can also activate the ABN AMRO app using your e.dentifier and your debit card. To do this, when you go to activate the app on your phone select ‘Activate with e.dentifier’.

Help with activation on a new phone

If you have a new phone, simply download and activate the ABN AMRO app and you’ll be able to do your banking again. We’d be happy to help you further.

Questions about activating the app

You can use the ABN AMRO app on your mobile device if you have an ABN AMRO current account and use Internet Banking.

You can use the ABN AMRO app on an iOS, iPadOS or Android device. Apple (iOS/iPadOS) and Google (Android) release security updates several times a year. These updates protect your phone or tablet. If a device no longer receives updates, that means that it is not properly secure.

Google, Apple and the manufacturers decide when a device stops receiving updates. This generally occurs when a device reaches a certain age. You are then unable to install a new version of iOS, iPadOS or Android and no longer receive security updates.

We feel it is important that you use the ABN AMRO app on a device that is fully protected. This is why the app only works on phones and tablets running a recent version of iOS, iPadOS or Android. If you are unable to download the app, your device might be outdated or you might need to install a newer version of your software.

These devices are compatible with the ABN AMRO app

If you want to install and activate the ABN AMRO app for a minor, we’ll show you step by step (in Dutch) how easy this is to do.

You may be asked to re-register your device in the following cases:

  • You uninstalled the app, and reinstalled it.
  • You are installing the app on a new device.
  • You’ve entered an incorrect identification code three times.
  • You removed your device from your list of registered devices through the app or Internet Banking.
  • You have installed the app, but have not used it on that device for more than 1 year.
  • You have switched to a new iPhone or iPad and restored a backup from the iCloud. To make sure the ABN AMRO app still works properly, delete the ABN AMRO app from your device. Download the app again form the Apple App Store. You'll find the link at the top of this page.
  • You have switched to a new Android device. To make sure the ABN AMRO app still works properly, delete the ABN AMRO app from your device. Download the app again form the Google Play Store. You'll find the link at the top of this page.

If you share your device with someone else, or you have a personal and a business account with us, you can add an additional profile to the app. You can log in separately with each profile, because each profile has its own account and its own identification code. If you want, you can add a personal photo to each profile. Please note: if you set up more than one profile, logging in with your fingerprint or with face recognition will be disabled. You will then only be able to log in with the identification code.

Here’s how to add a profile:

  1. Go to the log-in screen in the app.
  2. Tap the image of a profile; this will open a list of all the existing profiles.
  3. Tap Add profile and follow the steps.

Once you’ve done that, here’s how to log in with a different profile:

  1. Open the app and tap the profile photo.
  2. Tap the profile you want to log in with.
  3. Log in.

If you want to activate the ABN AMRO app for both accounts, you need to active it for your personal account first. Once you’ve done that, add a business profile by following the steps below.

Questions about activating using your ID

Yes, it’s safe. We do everything we can to process your personal data safely. The ABN AMRO app satisfies all the latest security requirements. Your data is encrypted and transmitted to us via a secure connection. We check the information to make sure that you are who you say you are.

This is for verification purposes. We compare your photo with the photo on the ID and the information we extract from your ID so that we know you’re the person you say you are.

If your phone is less than five years old, it will probably have an NFC reader which can scan the chip in your ID. All iPhones starting from the iPhone 7 have this feature. Androids differ from one device to another. To find out whether your phone has an NFC reader, look for NFC in the menu or settings.

If you have a budget phone, it may not have an NFC reader.

  • If you are unable to activate the ABN AMRO app with your ID, you can activate the app with an e.dentifier. The ABN AMRO app manual explains how to do this.
  • If you don’t have your own e.dentifier, feel free to borrow one from a family member or housemate who does. If that’s not possible, you can order an e.dentifier.

You won’t be able to activate the ABN AMRO app with your ID if you don’t authorise this. However, you can complete the activation process using your e.dentifier.

Questions about logging in

If you install the ABN AMRO app on your mobile device, you can still do you banking on your PC or laptop. You can choose to use the app just for logging in to Internet Banking. You can of course also do your banking in the app, but you don’t have to.

Yes, you can still use the e.dentifier to log in to Internet Banking after installing the app. Note that we will phase out the e.dentifier altogether in the future. The ABN AMRO app will then replace the e.dentifier.

You can already replace the e.dentifier with the app by using the app to log in to Internet Banking on your PC or laptop. This is not only convenient because your phone is often within easy reach anyway, it’s also more secure because you can continuously update the app - and the security features - to the latest version.

Find out more about logging in using the app.

When you use the ABN AMRO app for the first time, you set your own 5-digit identification code.

No problem, you can set a new identification code yourself on the app’s home screen:

  1. Open the app (but don’t log in).
  2. Tap the icon with the question mark in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap ‘I can’t remember my identification code’.
  4. Tap ‘Reset identification code’ and follow the steps.
  1. In the app, select ‘Profile’.
  2. Under ‘Access and usage’ tap ‘5-digit identification code’.
  3. Enter your current identification code.
  4. Enter your new identification code.
  5. Enter your new identification code again to confirm it.

Other questions

If only the last digit has changed, updating your card number in the ABN AMRO app is simple.

  1. Tap ‘Profile’.
  2. Under ‘Access and usage’ tap ‘Set new card number’ and change your card number.

If digits other than just the last digit of your card number have changed, delete your device registration and register again.

  1. Tap ‘Profile’.
  2. Tap ‘Registered devices’.
  3. Tap the recycle bin next to the name of your device.
  4. Confirm with your identification code.

Now you need to reactivate the ABN AMRO app. You'll need your ID to do that.

  • In the ABN AMRO app: go to ‘Profile’ > ‘Access and usage’ > ‘Registered devices’.
  • On Internet Banking: go to ‘Manage mobile devices’ .

On this page, you can also remove a registered phone that you no longer use.

Sometimes you may see your device listed more than once. This happens, for example, when you uninstall and then reinstall the ABN AMRO app on this device. By doing so, you in fact re-register the device. You can simply remove any duplicate entries from the list. When you do so, make sure you do not remove the registration with the most recent date.
