These sectors include energy-intensive industries such as iron and steel production, cement manufacturing, and chemical production. Additionally, the refining industry and sectors involved in the production of non-ferrous metals also contribute significantly to emissions covered under the EU ETS.

Shipping

The EU ETS has been be extended to cover CO₂ from all large ships (of 5 000 gross tonnage and above) entering EU ports, per 1 January 2024.

To determine if your company is subject to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), you need to evaluate whether your operation fall under the scope of activities and thresholds specified by the EU ETS Directive .

You can purchase EUA at auctions that are organised by the European Energy Exchange (EEX) on behalf of the EU, Germany and Poland. And EUAs can be bought and sold on the secondary market.

The Union Registry serves to guarantee accurate accounting for all allowances issued under the EU emissions trading system (EU ETS). The registry keeps track of the ownership of allowances held in electronic accounts, just as a bank has a record of all its customers and their money.

The Dutch Emissions Authority manages the Dutch part of the Union Registry.

The reporting period is a calendar year from 1 January until 31 December. When you are subject to the EU ETS, you must verify the emissions data for the reporting period by an accredited verifier by 31 March of the following year . On 30 September of the following year, the emissions allowances must be surrendered.

For the spot auction, orders are executable as multiples of 500 EUAs. For the secondary spot market as well as the forward market ABN AMRO Bank accepts order sizes of multiples of 1,000 EUAs. Other order sizes can be discussed.

The EU ETS II refers to the expansion and revision of the European Union Emissions Trading System, which aims to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors. ABN AMRO aims to be ready to also facilitate the buying and selling of emission allowances under EU ETS II.
