Frequently asked questions about SEPA

With the introduction of SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area), we have 1 European payment market with uniform payment products. No more separate rules per country, but the same guidelines for each country. This makes it a lot easier to pay within the SEPA countries. Holding 1 single bank account allows you to transfer money to and collect money from everyone in all SEPA countries. A uniform payments market also means more competition. This can result in better products, more efficiency and lower costs.

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. It is the international bank account number for businesses and consumers in the SEPA countries. You must use the IBAN for every credit transfer or direct debit. You can find your own IBAN on the account statement and in Internet Banking.

Please note: you should accept credit transfers and direct debits from all IBAN’s. You are not allowed to decline a credit transfer or direct debit because the IBAN is held in another country. Your administration systems should be able to process credit transfers and direct debits from all SEPA countries.

All countries from the European Union belong to the Single Euro Payments Area, as well as a number of other countries.
