You can only make a direct debit if your client has given you a mandate. This can be done on paper or using an eMandate. There are, however, some rules you need to follow.
For SEPA business-to-business direct debits, your debtors not only need to give you a mandate, they also need to register the details of the mandate with their own bank using an (online) registration form.
You can design your own mandate form for the SEPA core and business-to-business (B2B) direct debits. The mandate must contain a number of fixed fields to be filled in and the mandatory consent text.
For the SEPA core direct debit, you can also use standard mandate forms, also known as ‘traffic light cards’. We have given some examples below.
eMandates let you receive mandates from your clients through your website in a way that is both secure and legally valid. You can fully embed eMandates in your online sales process, which makes it very easy for your clients to issue an eMandate.
To start using eMandates, you need to take out a SEPA direct debit contract with us with the eMandates option.
Alternatively, you can have eMandates added to your existing SEPA direct debit contract.
With SEPA business-to-business direct debits, the debtor must sign a mandate and send it to you. The debtor must also register the mandate with their own bank through an (online) registration form.
Please note that you can only make the direct debit once your debtor’s bank has completed the registration.
To make it easy for your clients, send them both the mandate and the registration form. That way, they can sign both forms at once and return them to you. You can then process the mandates yourself. Forward the registration form to your debtor’s bank.
Alternatively, you can use the eMandate. In that case, registration with the payer’s bank is automatic.
