Commercial credit transfer

SEPA credit transfer

SEPA credit transfers are used within the Netherlands and other SEPA countries. You can use single credit transfers or batches. SEPA credit transfer batches are delivered by you in the PAIN (XML) file format. You need not maintain separate accounts for credit transfers in and to other SEPA countries. All you need is your ABN AMRO account in the Netherlands.

Superfast payments (Instant Payments)

Many SEPA credit transfers can be credited to a recipient's account within seconds: every day of the year and at any time of the day, including evenings and at the weekend. This applies to 'single' credit transfers you input manually via Access Online, Internet Banking or the ABN AMRO app, provided the recipient's bank co-operates. The following message will then appear in the summary of the entry: 'With the recipient: immediately'. If the recipient's bank does not yet co-operate, you will see: 'With the recipient: within 1 working day'. Credit transfers between two Dutch ABN AMRO accounts are always credited to the recipient's account immediately.

What does it mean for you?
Most of the Dutch banks and a large part of the other European banks support making superfast payments. Many of your customers can see that a credit transfer into your account will be credited within a few seconds. And they expect you to be aware of that immediately. Also when they contact your customer services department during the evening or the weekend. Take these types of questions into account.

Sometimes superfast payments are not possible
Not all credit transfers can be credited to a recipient's account within seconds. For example:

  • credit transfers via Access Direct
  • batch credit transfers
  • credit transfers in a currency other than euros
  • credit transfers to accounts outside SEPA
  • credit transfers to a non-participating bank
  • iDEAL transfers

How and when to deliver

Take these delivery deadlines into account when delivering credit transfers which will be credited to the recipient’s account within 1 working day. Also, check the file format and example files.

Urgent Payments

An urgent payment is still possible. If an ordinary credit transfer can be credited to the recipient's account within seconds, it is not necessary to make an urgent payment. In Internet Banking and Access Online, we check this for you automatically.

Standing Orders

If you pay the same bills every month, simply set up a standing order. We'll take care of the rest. And standing orders are also processed as Instant Payments, provided the recipient's bank co-operates.

Frequently asked questions

You cannot reverse a payment or standing order. You can only ask the beneficiary to return the amount.

The following message will then appear in the summary of the entry: 'With the recipient: immediately'. If the recipient's bank does not (yet) co-operate, you will see: 'With the recipient: within 1 working day'.

You use the new credit transfer screen for this purpose. Navigate to the main menu and choose Cash Management > New credit transfer. While entering the data you notice 'With the recipient: immediately' when the money can be credited to the recipient's account within seconds. If the recipient's bank does not (yet) co-operate, you will see: 'With the recipient: within 1 working day'.
Credit transfers initiated via Cash Management > Classic payments cannot be processed as Instant Payments.

The money will be refunded to you. You always see the debit entry on your account first and the credit entry afterwards. In case of an Instant Payment the credit entry is realised within seconds. In case of an ordinary credit transfer, it may take a few days before the money is refunded. You also see why the credit transfer was not successful.

Sometimes it turns out that a credit transfer cannot be credited to the recipient’s account within seconds after all. Because, for example, the recipient’s bank has a temporary technical fault. In that case, the credit entry into your account includes the explanation 'Maximum processing time reached'. Then you can try to transfer the money again at a later point in time.
