Acceptgiro to end

With effect from 1 June 2023, we will no longer process acceptgiros

There has been a sharp drop in the use of acceptgiros in recent years. More and more people use other payment methods. With effect from 1 June 2023, banks in the Netherlands will stop processing acceptgiros.

Important dates

  1. 1 January 2023

Printing houses and service agencies no longer provide acceptgiros to organisations with an acceptgiro agreement.

  2. 1 March 2023

Organisations with an acceptgiro agreement no longer send acceptgiros to their customers.

  3. 31 May 2023

This is the final day on which banks in the Netherlands process acceptgiros.

  4. 1 June 2023

Banks in the Netherlands no longer process acceptgiros. By this date at the latest, the acceptgiro agreement with the bank will be terminated.

Alternative payment methods

Direct Debit

With a SEPA Direct Debit, collections, either one-off or recurrent, can be made from the debtor's bank account. Beware of refunds.

iDEAL

The online payment method most frequently used in the Netherlands. All payments in one dashboard.

Tikkie for business

Do you want to collect your receivables quickly? You can easily get it done via Tikkie for business. Send your payment request via the Tikkie app, the Tikkie portal or Internet Banking Business.

ABN AMRO

Paper bill or payment request

Do your customers or donors prefer a paper payment method? The instruction to pay allows you to present the payment details systematically on your invoice or payment request. And in the same order as your customers or donors have to fill out the credit transfer form. They can also transfer money, of course, via Internet Banking or the ABN AMRO app.

This is what you need to know

With effect from 1 June 2023, banks in the Netherlands will stop processing acceptgiros. This means that an acceptgiro which will have been fully completed, duly signed and received by the payer’s bank on 31 May 2023, will be processed. An acceptgiro which will have been received by the payer’s bank on or after 1 June 2023, will no longer be processed. Advise your customers to send acceptgiros to their own bank well before 31 May 2023.

Do not send any more acceptgiros after 1 March 2023. This will give your clients or donors a few more months to pay you using this form. Any acceptgiros received by the payer’s bank after 31 May 2023 will not be processed.

The paper forms to initiate a SEPA credit transfer can still be used. Your customers or donors can contact their own bank to order these paper credit transfer forms.

The alternative payment methods, like iDEAL, Tikkie, Direct Debit or Instruction to pay, are also suitable for donations. Which alternative fits you best, depends on your target group. You can also use several payment methods next to each other.

With the alternative payment methods, you can also use the Dutch payment reference which may consist a maximum of 16 digits. This payment reference can be used freely, also when you send your invoices or payment requests. Or, you opt for the international ISO payment reference.

Whenever your customers enter the Dutch payment reference or the ISO payment reference when initiating a credit transfer through internet banking or mobile banking, banks in the Netherlands verify the check digit. As a result, the automated reconciliation will remain at the same level when using one or more alternative payment methods.
