Get ready for your trip

Use our handy checklist

Whatever type of holiday you’re planning, being well prepared means that you can enjoy a carefree trip. We’ve compiled a checklist with eight handy tips for you.

  1. Don’t forget your passport or ID card, and scan it before you leave

Check that your travel document (passport or ID card) hasn’t expired before you leave for your trip. If you’re travelling outside Europe, make sure you’ve got a passport. For some countries, your passport also needs to be valid for a certain extra period. It’s also handy to scan important documents, such as your passport and tickets, and store them in an email folder so you can access them wherever you are. You’ll be able to present these scans to an embassy, for example, if you lose any important documents.

  2. Check that your payment profile and insurance are set correctly

The default setting for your debit card’s payment profile is ‘Europe’. Check whether you need to change this to ‘World’ before you leave. Certain countries within Europe also require the ‘World’ profile. Changing your payment profile is easy. Remember to change your travel insurance to worldwide cover too.

  3. Take some cash, a debit card and credit card on your travels

It’s important to be prepared for unexpected situations, such as a delay to your flight. So make sure that you take some cash and a debit card with you. If you’re travelling to a faraway country, it’s good to know that you can pay anywhere in the world using a credit card. A credit card is compulsory if you want to hire a car, including in Europe.

  4. Find out what your travel insurance covers

If you have annual travel insurance, do you know what additional cover you’ll need for this particular holiday? For example: Europe or Worldwide cover? Have you enabled your winter sports cover? And if your children are travelling with you, does your insurance cover them too? Check all these things before you leave so you know that you’re properly insured.

  5. Medical costs

Your health insurance covers medical costs abroad up to the equivalent costs in the Netherlands. In some cases, this will not cover the actual cost and you will have to pay the shortfall yourself. These essential medical costs are covered as part of your short-term travel insurance. They will also be covered by your annual travel insurance if you opt for Medical Costs cover.

  6. Make a note of important telephone numbers

Look up important telephone numbers before you leave. These include the number of the Dutch embassy in the country or countries you’re visiting, or the emergency number of your insurance company. Handy if you incur damage on your travels.
If you’re insured with ABN AMRO, be sure to save our emergency number in your phone: +31 26 400 23 45.

  7. Enable your cancellation cover in plenty of time

Once you’ve booked your trip, it's time to enable your additional cancellation cover. That way you’ll be insured if you need to cancel your trip unexpectedly.

You must enable this additional cancellation cover within 14 days of booking your trip, unless the departure date is more than one month after the start date of the insurance. Did you know that this additional insurance covers you for delays of as little as eight hours (and more)?

  8. Make sure that your children are insured for travelling too

If you took out ABN AMRO Annual Travel Insurance after 1 May 2015, children living at home and children of 18 years and over, living away from home but in full-time education, are insured too. Even if they go on holiday without you. This includes children who live in residential care or a nursing home.
