Calculate your annual margin

To get the tax break, calculate your annual margin before you start putting additional money aside for your pension. Your annual margin is the maximum amount that the Dutch Tax and Customs Authority will allow you to deposit in a pension account to qualify for a tax credit. Calculate your annual margin in just 10 minutes.

Here’s what you need to calculate your annual margin

Your annual margin is calculated based on your annual salary for the previous year.

  • Go to Mijn Belastingdienst (in Dutch) and log in with your DigiD.
  • Click ‘Inkomstenbelasting’ (income tax), select the most recent tax year, and download your tax return (look for ‘Definitieve aanslag inkomstenbelasting [year]’ under ‘Berichten’).
  • This tax return will have a section entitled ‘Inkomsten uit loondienst’ (income from employment), specifying your employer and ‘Loon’ (pay), among other things. Use the amount stated under ‘Loon’ (pay).

Perhaps you also have other income, such as:

  • income from self-employment
  • pension and other benefit payments
  • income from other work
  • income from assets made available to your own business or the business of a tax partner
  • spousal/partner maintenance received

Here’s how to find out exactly how much your other income was in the previous year:

  • Go to Mijn Belastingdienst (in Dutch) and log in with your DigiD.
  • Click ‘Inkomstenbelasting’ (income tax), select the most recent tax year, and download your tax return (look for ‘Definitieve aanslag inkomstenbelasting [year]’ under ‘Berichten’).
  • The types of income listed above will be stated separately on your tax return. If they are not stated, this means you did not have other income and there is no other income to include in the calculation of your annual margin.
  • If you had income from self-employment, use the amount for ‘Fiscalewinstberekening’ (calculation of taxable profit) for the calculation of your annual margin.

Factor A is the amount by which your pension has grown over a calendar year. Your Factor A is stated in the pension statement (‘Uniform Pensioenoverzicht,’ UPO) that your pension provider sends you every year.

If you have not accrued any pension entitlements over the past year, use 0 for Factor A in the calculation of your annual margin.

If you had multiple employers last year, add up the Factors A for the various pension providers.

How to find your current pension provider:

  • Go to Mijnpensioenoverzicht and download your pension overview. This document will show your current and any previous pension provider(s).

Where to find your annual pension statement:

  • Go to your current pension provider’s website and log in with your DigiD.
  • Your annual pension statement will generally be available in the ‘Documents’ section.
  • Download the annual pension statement. Most employers send out annual pension statements from July.

Where to find your Factor A (pension accrual):

  • You will generally receive your annual pension statement around halfway into the year.
  • Go to the last page.
  • Use the figure stated for ‘Pensioenaangroei factor A’ (pension accrual factor A)’.

If you already paid money into our pension account or another savings or investment account for your pension this year, add up the additional deposits towards your pension.
